“Mrs. Tait? This is Abigail from the Henry residence. I wonder…” Her voice trailed off.

“What is it, Abigail? Is Adele all right?” Missy dreaded these calls.

“Physically. She’s here, in the house, but this is not a good morning for her. So far, I’ve kept her away from the others, but…”

“I understand. I’ll be right there. Just keep her in her own wing.”

“What happened?” Missy arrived within fifteen minutes.

“She came down the stairs with her dress on backwards and unzipped.” Abigail’s feet shifted from side to side, and she didn’t meet Missy’s eyes. “It’s happened before where she’s come downstairs not properly dressed, but never this bad. And her hair stuck up all over the place.”

They both knew Adele’s pride in impeccable grooming.

“There’s more.” Abigail’s guilt at ratting out her employer sat hard on her heart. But she’d promised. “She tried to put on makeup but got it all over her face.” Like a horror movie caricature of a clown.

Squeezing the woman’s hand, Missy tried to reassure her. “You’re not being disloyal. You’re doing exactly what she asked you to do. Remember that. Together, we’ll do what we need to do to protect her.”
